AMD Branches Out to New AM5 Platform with X670 Extreme, X670 and B650 Chipsets to Debut New First Generation AM5 Motherboards

As expected, AMD launched a new AM5 platform today officially bidding farewell to the older AM4 platform launched in 2016. Its new LGA socket will power the upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors to begin with and introduces the main advantages of choosing a new socket. .

The new AMD Socket AM5 platform offers advanced connectivity for our most demanding enthusiasts. This new socket features a 1718-pin LGA design supporting up to 170W CPU TDPs, dual-channel DDR5 memory, and a new SVI3 power infrastructure for optimal all-core performance with our Ryzen processors from the 7000 series.

AMD Socket AM5 features the industry’s highest PCIe 5.0 lane count with up to 24 lanes, making it our fastest, largest, and most extensive desktop platform with next-gen support and beyond the class of storage cards and graphics cards.

The AM5 family includes three levels of motherboards:

  • X670 Extreme: Offers maximum connectivity and extreme overclocking capabilities with PCIe 5.0 support for two graphics slots and one storage slot
  • X670: Enthusiast overclocking support with PCIe 5.0 support on a storage slot with optional graphics support
  • B650: Designed for power users with support for PCIe 5.0 storage

Motherboard models covering all three chipsets are expected from partners such as Asrock, Asus, Biostar, Gigabyte and MSI, and PCIe 5.0 storage solutions will be available from a host of partners including Crucial, Micron and Phison.
