How to Download BBC iPlayer Shows and Movies for Offline Viewing

If you don’t have an internet connection, you can download many shows and movies to BBC iPlayer for your entertainment.

BBC iPlayer is full of great shows and movies. Whether you want a classic British comedy, crime thriller, or a fun panel, chances are the BBC iPlayer has something for you.

You can download items from BBC iPlayer to watch them when you don’t have an internet connection, such as when you are traveling, or if it is generally unstable and continues to buffer.

Here’s how to download BBC iPlayer shows for offline viewing on desktop and mobile.

How to download BBC iPlayer content to the desktop

Before you start, you need to download and install the BBC iPlayer downloader app. It’s free to download. If you already have an older version of the application (version number starting with 1), you will need to uninstall it first.

Now with the Downloads app installed:

  1. Go to BBC iPlayer website.

  2. Navigate to the content you want to download.

  3. Click on To download.

  4. Select either Yes, download in HD Where Yes, download in SD depending on the video quality you want. HD downloads will require more disk space.

  5. Your browser may ask you to choose which application to download the file to. If so, select Choose the app, select BBCiPlayerDownloads, and click Open link.

  6. The BBC iPlayer Downloads app will open and your download will begin.

You can start watching your downloaded show or movie immediately, you don’t have to wait for it to finish. Keep in mind that you can only watch through the iPlayer app and no other media player.

If you’ve downloaded a lot of stuff, use the sorting functions at the top right (like Upload date and Soon expired) to help organize.

When you’re done watching something and want to remove it from the app, tap the button X icon and click To delete.

How to download BBC iPlayer content on mobile

To download for offline viewing on mobile, you don’t need a separate app. You can use the main BBC iPlayer app, available at ios, Android, and Amazon fire.

  1. Open the iPlayer app.

  2. Navigate to the content you want to download.

  3. Faucet To download.

  4. The content will begin to download.

  5. To find your downloads, tap Menu > Downloads > Downloaded.

Unlike the desktop, you’ll have to wait for the download to finish before you can start watching.

To remove something from your downloads, go to the Downloaded tab, tap on content and select Delete download > Yes.

To set your download preferences, such as downloading via a mobile connection, tap Menu > Settings and look under the Download settings on your mind.

Can you download BBC iPlayer content outside the UK?

You have to pay the BBC license fee and be in UK to download something from BBC iPlayer. However, if you download something in the UK, it should play when you are abroad.

The exception to this rule is if you download something the app is updated and you don’t open the app until you leave the UK. So just make sure to open the app before traveling.

How long can you keep BBC iPlayer downloads?

You can keep the movies and shows you download as long as they are available on BBC iPlayer. Some content is only available for 30 days, others for years. Your downloads will be automatically deleted when the expiration date is reached. You can see the expiration date on the movie or show page.
